Modern Language Center
The MLC is open Monday – Thursday, 8:00 AM-4:30 PM and Friday 8:00 AM – 1:00 PM.
During a typical semester…
Get tutoring help or hang out with friends in our Modern Language Center (MLC, Jordan Hall 391). Located inside our department’s main office suite, the Center hosts several events for our language students, but also open to everyone. Tutoring tables will have open hours for students to come and go and get assistance with their coursework in Chinese, French, German, Latin, and Spanish.
Take advantage of our many viewing areas, including a big screen TV with comfy couches. Hop on PCs and Macs hooked up to a high-speed printer. Borrow one of our many dictionaries and grammar guides.

Your selection as a tutor is indicative of the confidence that faculty members and the staff of the student Modern Language Center have in your ability to support the University’s effort to provide academic support to all Butler undergraduate students. Tutoring is one of the most effective interventions for students who are struggling with grasping and understanding difficult concepts presented in class. In addition to the satisfaction that comes from supporting others as they work to achieve their academic goals, you will learn a great deal as you review material and help tutees learn how to be successful.
If you are interested in becoming a tutor, please send your information to our department chair, Dr. Eloise Sureau at esureau@xsme.net. If we have an opening in the language, she will review interested candidates and reach out.
Employment Info
Students are paid on a bi-weekly basis, every other Friday. Students submit time worked online through my.butler. When receiving payment, students have two options: they can pick up a check at Student Accounts (Jordan Hall 102) or they can receive direct deposit payments. Direct deposit is recommended for student employees, as it is much easier for both the University and the student. In order to do this, students must submit a voided check and direct deposit form, found on the Human Resources webpage.
It is the expectation of the student Modern Language Center that tutors maintain a solid GPA and follow through on their responsibilities as a tutor. If a tutor is unable to balance their academic load and tutoring responsibilities, the MLC will work with the tutor to ensure that priority is given to the tutor’s individual academics.
